43 Salem High School and Middle School vocal soloists performed Saturday, January 31 at the Indiana State School Music Association District Solo-Ensemble Festival. The Salem Schools were among 35 area schools represented at the annual event hosted by Floyd Central High School.
Eleven SHS singers will advance to the State Solo-Ensemble at Perry Meridian High School on Saturday, February 21. They include Courtney Rogers, Keegan Coomer, Laura Andis, Lauren Allen, Teyha Morison, Tyasia Gant, and Vanessa Nantz.
Also headed to State are Cameron Davidson, Christan Bowling, Cody Blackwell, and Jordan Borden. Sami Terrell also earned a “Gold” rating in Group II at the event. The State-bound singers will perform in a free Honors Recital at 7:15 pm, Thursday, February 19 at the SHS Presentation Room.
Other SHS soloists performing included A’ndrea Hollars, Bri Little, Chelsie Williams, Hannah Hayes, Jessica Kersey, Whitney Journell, Drew Pickerill, Logan Thompson, Elizabeth Batchelor, Sabrina Tuell, and Tiffany Cooke.
Vocal soloists from Salem Middle School earning Gold medals include Cora Saunders, Isabelle Reynolds, Jacki Azcuy, Justice Brown, Lauren Stephenson, Melea Hardin, Sarah Yoder, and Sierra Bowling.
Also earning Gold medals were Sydney Rogers, Brooklyn Brown, Brooklyn Thompson, Callie Backeherms, Gracie Rainbolt, Kennedy Abner, Kiley Gilbert, and Samantha Calhoun.
SMS students bringing home Silver medals included Kelly Mount, Breawna Rice, Jaden Knuckles, and John Hayes.
The students have been engaged in intensive work with staff vocal coaches and accompanists Allison Fory Hall, Megan Touchstone, and the Rev. Meg Flannagan, along with Director of Vocal Music Bill Spencer-Pierce. Over 300 private lessons were delivered to the students over the last eight weeks, paid for by grants from the Salem Choirs and the Salem Choir Parents.
